Manchester looks into green roofs for all new large buildings

Aug 21 2009

Drivers Jonas and EDAW AECOM have been asked by Manchester City Council and the Commission for the New Economy to look into a city-wide green roof drive.

In their report, the firms advise Greater Manchester councils to adopt strategies under local development frameworks. They suggest that any building of more than 1,000m2 should have an 80 per cent green roof.

EDAW AECOM director of ecology Gary Grant said: "The idea is that planning authorities make sure that green roofs are brought forward as soon as possible."

A steering group including Manchester Metropolitan University and Bury, Stockport and Trafford councils has been set up to consider the recommendations before they go to other local authorities for consideration.

Drivers Jonas head of sustainability Jon Lovell said: "Green roofs deliver so many benefits. It is astonishing that there are so few across Greater Manchester."

It is believed that if this policy is adopted it will be the first of its kind in the UK. Similar policies have been successful in Switzerland, where green roofs are mandatory in some areas. Feasibility studies are being carried out on five buildings in Manchester to assess viability.

Manchester executive member for the environment Richard Cowell said: "Green roofs are part of our plan to create a well-adapted, successful and competitive city."
