Sedum Blooming in the Sun!

Apr 27 2010

DON'T PANIC!
If your Sedum roof appears red, particularly where it receives more sun, this is a very normal occurrence and certainly does not indicate imminent death of the plants. Its caused by several things, most commonly, lack of water (we haven't had rain for weeks) and temperature. Sedums are CAM plants and photosynthesize very differently from other plants and they need temperature change to trigger this process, so the warmer days and cool nights, and hopefully a bit more rain will see them start to return to their green colour fairly quickly.

The odd way they photosynthesize is one of the main reasons why Sedums are so effective as a green roof plant because they don't loses so much water during the hot day.

Personally, I like to see the change of colour and an established roof can happily cope with natural changes in the elements.

BUT, don't forget, if yours is a new roof, water it for five or six months until the roots are established.
