Technical Data

Sedum

  • Sedums are naturally found on exposed rocky terrain, making them resilient to extremes of weather.
  • They hold a lot of water in fleshy stems and leaves, for the first year regular irrigation is recommended, however, once established, irrigation is only required during extended hot dry weather.
  • We use 8 different sedum varieties that add year round interest and colour. Our sedum varieties are grown onto a biodegradable coir blanket to a minimum of 70% coverage, we grow them on for 18 months before transferring the young plants to a Sky-Garden Greenroof. The varieties used in our blankets have, overtime, proven their tolerance to shade and extremes of weather.

Turf

  • Turf is better suited as part of an Intensive Sky-Garden Greenroof with good access, providing a conventional lawn finish. However, you will need to consider a maintenance schedule of mowing, weeding and irrigation. Turf requires deep soil, a minimum of 250mm.
  • Turf with wildflowers sown throughout offers an alternative meadow finish.

Rooting material

  • Sky-Garden Greenroof sedum substrate for use in conjunction with our pre-grown sedum blankets on extensive greenroofs. Unlike most plants which need deep and nutrient rich soil, sedum requires very little nutrient supply from rooting material; this reduces the likelihood of colonization from invading plant species and minimizes the overall weight of the greenroof.
  • Lightweight topsoil, a blend of graded topsoil, leca and bark. Minimizes the weight of turf roofs.
  • Bio-diverse soil is made up of a blend of graded soils, local aggregate, crushed brick and organic matter, in order to replicate local brownfield sites.
  • For pitched roofs over 20º it is often necessary to contain the substrate within a cellular system to prevent the substrate slipping. We use an interlocking sedum roof cell that forms a solid central layer to retain the substrate and sedum blanket. A capillary fleece under the roof cell retains moisture enabling the installation of long lasting sedum systems on pitched roofs.

Filter Fleece

Spun polypropylene fleece that prevents fines blocking the drainage layer. Essential to the long term success of any greenroof.

Drainage and water retention layer

  • Biodrain: Recycled soft foam with a cuspated base layer and integrated long term fertilizer. Simple but highly effective as a base substrate layer for extensive greenroof applications. This material acts as drainage, nutrient and water retention material and also helps protect the roof whist laying the remaining greenroof products.
  • Geodrain: A high quality rigid polypropylene drainage layer which efficiently removes excess water whilst retaining a base level of perched water. Geodrain is specifically designed for intensive and semi-intensive greenroof systems and has been used successfully on many large scale projects throughout the UK. It is capable of withstanding compressive weights up to 130 tonnes/m2 making it ideal for use not only as a base for roof gardens but also as a drainage layer for podium deck landscaping.

Edging material

  • Riverstone edging: Provides a firebreak between roof heat sources and sedum; filters plant debris from run off and provides a decorative finish. Supplied as a 300mm x 110mm channel in 25kg bags.
  • Aluminium Edging: A pre-formed metal edge strip that provides a perimeter upstand to contain the greenroof components.
