One of the first decisions to make is the type of green roof that answers your needs:

  • An intensive roof replicates a ground level garden, provides new amenity space and as such is high maintenance.
  • An extensive roof is finished with low growing plants such as sedum or wildflower blankets and are low (but do need some) maintenance.
  • A Bio-diverse roof aims to recreate pre-existing ground ecosystems using local aggregates which colonise naturally over time and consequently require no maintenance.

Vegetation finish:

  • pre-grown sedum blankets made up of a wide range of species
  • pre-grown Verdant Blanket™, a wildflower blanket comprising 80 species all of which are of UK provenance
  • plug plants of various sedum species and the Verdant finish
  • both wildflower and Verdant seeds
  • high quality turf

All green roofs need some basic care and attention once or twice a year and during the first few months and dry periods, watering is essential.

Sky Garden offers a highly skilled aftercare programme as well as temporary and permanent irrigation.

Questions answered:

Are green roofs always green?
Sedums often change colour due to lack of water and extreme cold but throughout the winter, a green roof is reliably green. However, during spring, summer and autumn, shades of red, yellow, blue, white and purples combine to provide a changing tapestry of colours. Wildflower roofs lose a lot of their vegetation density but a lot of species remain green even through the winter.

What plant varieties can I use?
We use a selection of sedums and wildflower blankets that have proven their drought and shade tolerance. You can however introduce such plants as thyme, marjoram, small bulbs like crocus and narcissi or simply scatter some wildflower seeds. Mosses and lichens will also succeed on most green roofs.
