Before Sky Garden start installing, the roof must be completely watertight. Sky Garden does not offer a waterproofing service but we work with the best of the UK’s waterproof manufacturers and installers and understand the individual requirements of every water proof type.

There are various types of green roofs – all of which have a similar general structure although the exact elements used vary according to the desired finish or roof slope.

In simple terms ALL green roofs consist of the same primary components:

1) The drainage layer enables a free pathway for excess water to escape to the drain outfalls.

2) Filter fleece prevents the drain from blocking up. The fleece must have the ability to allow free drainage but must also prevent fines from passing through its matrix.

3) The substrate layer provides a range of functions, nutrient for the plants, balanced grade of particle size to support the root matrix, allow free drainage, and retain moisture. Local blends can be offered and part of our unique and specialist service.

4) Vegetation choice is vast. Wildflowers, Sedums, Trees and shrubs all have different requirements. We specialize in British native and local provenance plants.
