Riverstone System with Protection Fleece

Drainage channels are an important part of a green roof system. A border around the perimeter, abutments or penetrations

Sky Garden's riverstones are perfect for the perimeter of any green roof. The stones allow for free drainage of the roof, as well as giving the system a clean, crisp finish.

In order to calculate the quantity required please follow the below guidance when entering this information into the below calculator
  • m2 required = total linear metres of stone channels (m) x width (m)
e.g. 24m x 0.5m = 12m2 The Riverstone System comes with protection fleece to be installed underneath the stone areas Tip: The depth selected should be consistent with the interfacing elements i.e if installed alongside a sedum blanket system the depth should be no less than 50mm but no more than the aluminium edge detail (100mm)

  • Riverstone is used on the majority of green roofs to allowing for free-draining roof perimeters. In some instances, the border created can stop moist vegetation sitting against brickwork whilst also providing an aesthetically pleasing finish. Installed from 150mm to 500mm borders at 80 – 150mm depth.

    Riverstone Edging for Biodiverse Roofs

Riverstone can also be used in the creation of biodiverse roofs as an area of habitat creation, providing areas on the roof of free drainage and dry zones, installed at varying depths from 50 – 150mm

The river stones are naturally rounded* and washed ready to be used. The stone diameters vary from 20 to 40mm and colours are browns and greys.

Sky Garden cannot guarantee all riverstones are rounded. Stones are screened before bagging, but damage on transit may occur.

Please note: Recent updates to the Industry Guidance requires a 500mm riverstone border around all vertical elements to a depth of 75mm to create a firebreak to prevent the spread of fire. To ensure a vegetation free firebreak an aluminium profile should also be used. Further information can be found in the download section

  • Popular FAQs

    • Can I choose what plants to have?
Sky Garden’s seed and blanket mixes have been specifically designed to work well on green roofs. The thin, low nutrient substrate and exposure can make it hard for some plants to grow well. However we do offer bespoke plants and systems, especially on intensive green roofs. For a full quote and design brief for a bespoke system please contact our sales team.
    • Do I need to water my green roof?
Sedum is used because it is drought resistant and very hardy. Under normal circumstances the roof should not need regular watering. However, live material must be irrigated immediately following installation. This irrigation must continue in the first few months following installation and again in especially hot and dry periods. Sky Garden recommends full saturation of the system once a week in these periods.
    • How much does a green roof cost?
Lorem Ipsum is simply dummy text of the printing and typesetting industry. Lorem Ipsum has been the industry's standard dummy text ever since the 1500s, when an unknown printer took a galley of type and scrambled it to make a type specimen book.
    • Does a green roof need maintaining?
Yes. Green Roofs are 'Low-Maintenance' not 'No-Maintenance'. Green roof maintenance is generally a very simple process. They are designed so that they will not require endless hours spent on the roof in order to keep them looking at their best. Each type of green roof brings many different benefits to the occupants, the owners and the roof itself, so a little time maintaining the system is advantageous in the long run.
    • How did Green Roofs begin?
Green roofs are said to have originated as far back as the Babylon Gardens, where specialist irrigation systems were used to keep the vegetation lush. Other notable historical uses of green roofs are in Scandinavia, where traditional sod or turf roofs were used for insulation and camouflage. The modern day green roof originated in Germany in the 1970s. Serious storm water runoff needed a solution and the modern green roof was born. Now with advances in technology green roofs offer more benefits than ever before and prove to be a great alternative to standard roofing.
    • What is drainage board?
Drainage board is a specifically designed layer that absorbs enough water for the plants to grow naturally but allows excess water to run off. This means the substrate does not get waterlogged but the board holds water to be accessed when precipitation levels are lower. It also contributes to reducing runoff as it holds and stores water when rainfall is high for the plants to use when needed.
    • Will a green roof add weight to my roof?
Yes. Green roof systems tend to add around 100kg/m2 to a roof system depending on which system is chosen and the depth of the substrate. Most roof structures can tolerate this added weight but some may need to be reinforced. We cannot carry out structural surveys so it is worth having your roof checked by a structural engineer before installing your green roof.
