Let’s Talk Irrigation

While we are enjoying warm Summer days with little or no rainfall, we might need to consider water for our Green Roofs.

Sedum roofs often only need to be watered during very dry weather. Although access to a water point is essential during the establishment stage of most green roofs, especially if installation coincides with the hotter dryer Summer months (June- Aug). We suggest on an extensive sedum green roofs a permanent irrigation system is not necessary, but consideration must be paid to the roof and supplementary watering if periods of prolonged drought (2 weeks) occur. The deeper the substrate used the more moisture it can hold to ensure plant survival during dry periods.

We recommend two types of systems:

A visible sprinkler system which imitates and supplements rainfall and a drip pipe system which waters through a series of drip holes giving water directly to the soil/plant roots. Both these systems can be controlled via an electric control system or battery operated system.

Our systems are fitted with either a soil or rain sensor, so the possibility of over or under watering is reduced as the sensors will keep the moisture level at the desired optimum. Recycled water is preferable and ideal to use, provided we have the correct flow and pressure to run the system.

We generally use Hunter X core electric controllers with electric solenoids, which turns the water on and off or battery operated Galcon solenoids that can be set to water every day, multiple times or even once a week.
