Sky Garden's green roof project at Energy For Waste, Plymouth
The Energy From Waste plant in Devonport has, from the outset, been a sensitive project. Lying in between a heavily residential part of Devon’s famous port and the naval base. The key drivers were to maintain a good aesthetic whilst being accommodating to wildlife. The design, using a variety of coloured, sized and shaped aggregate, achieves the aesthetic well whilst imitating ‘barren’ brownfield environment based on research done into the habitat of Black Redstarts.
We worked closely with the designers (URS Plymouth) to achieve a practical solution combining a broad range of aggregates including the use of artificial boulders as centre-pieces that would have otherwise posed a significant issue due to point loading. The addition of non-chemically treated oak sleepers to form rings complement the teardrop mounds perfectly to achieve a fantastic end result.
